Scotland Health Care System held its annual Board of Trustees meeting Thursday night in the WR Dulin Conference Center.

Opening the meeting with comments regarding this past year's performance was Mr. Jim Mason, Chairman of the Board. "Despite challenges early in the year, 2009 was a wonderfully successful year for us. We opened several new services, started several new excellent physicians, and after a slow financial start, finished our year positively. Just as importantly, our strategic affiliation process culminated with our exciting new management affiliation with Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS)."

The agenda included the election of officers for 2010. Mr. Jim Mason was reelected as Chairman; The Honorable Craig Ellis, Vice Chair and Treasurer; and Mr. Greg Wood, President and CEO.

To better represent the communities served by Scotland Health Care System, it was the goal of the Board to recruit new board members from surrounding areas. Seven new members were appointed to at-large seats on the Board of Trustees:
Mr. Kyle Chavis, a Robeson County native and long-time bank executive. Mr. Chavis was previously associated with Wachovia Bank in Laurinburg and is currently Senior Vice President with Lumbee Bank in Pembroke.
Mr. David Harling, a Laurinburg native, and long-time State Farm insurance agent in Rockingham.
Dr. Kurt Jute, a successful Laurinburg ophthalmologist since 1998, rejoins the board after an absence of several years.
Mr. Hubbard "Donnie" McDonald is a Marlboro County native who practices law there. His prior service to the Health Care System includes several years on the Building Committee.
Mr. James McDougald, former football star and Maxton native, is a small business owner and newspaper publisher. He is also newly elected to the Maxton Town Council.
Ms. Jane Rogers, a South Carolina native, is a very active community leader in Marlboro County. She also brings past health care experience to her new role with Scotland Health Care System.
Mrs. Nancy Walker rejoined the Board after a brief absence and moves into a leadership position. She brings years of experience as a long-time Board member and former Chair of the Edwin Morgan Center Board of Trustees.

Three trustees, Annie Cureton, Doug Nederostek MD, and Terry Garner rotated off the Board. They were thanked by Mr. Mason for their service and presented with a framed portrait of the hospital in appreciation of their dedication, support, and service to the Health Care System. Mr. Garner's service also included two years as Vice Chairman and 4 years on the Board's Executive and Finance Committees. Ms. Cureton will remain on the Edwin Morgan Center Board. Dr. Nederostek continues his role as Medical Director of the Emergency Center.

Subsidiary appointments were also made at the meeting. Newly elected Chair of the Scotland Memorial Foundation is Ms. Nancy Adcock. Elected subsidiary chairmen included Chip Shytle, Chair of the Edwin Morgan Center; and Mr. Wayne Hobbs, Chair of the Building Committee.

The Board the reviewed and adopted a new three-year operating plan. Mr. Mason reviewed the Health Care System's three-year Strategic Plan with these comments, "The recruitment and retention of quality physicians is one of our most important objectives. We're also very excited about our plans to add a fixed cardiac catheterization lab and a second MRI to our services. We will always remain focused on ensuring each patient and family we serve receives the finest care and service possible."

On January 7th, at 6:00 p.m., the Annual Community will be held at the Community Health and Rehabilitation Center. All interested community members are invited to attend this meeting to learn more about highlights of the past year and plans for the coming year.
