Scotland Health Care System is pleased to announce Dr. Anila Ricks-Cord has joined the staff of Carolinas Womens Center in Laurinburg and is providing obstetrical and gynecological care.

Relocating from Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Ricks-Cord says she and her family are excited about becoming part of the community. "Laurinburg seems to be a great community and I'm looking forward to getting to know many people here."

Dr. Ricks-Cord began her journey into medicine as a Laboratory Technician working for a clinical investigator at Indiana University School of Medicine and later at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. After honing her research skills for two years and a stint in graduate school, she found she was better suited working with people than in a laboratory environment and decided it was time to enter medical school.

Upon earning her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC, Dr. Ricks-Cord then completed a three-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a one-year fellowship in operative obstetrics at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. She specializes in high-risk obstetrics.

The loss of her mother guided Dr. Ricks-Cord into the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. "My mother died when I was 22," she stated. "She didn't have ready access to medical care. During that time I recognized the person who provided her medical care didn't really "see" my mother as a person. This is what drives me today to help other women, to look out for the underdog, to ensure every woman I see receives quality medical care, and to encourage them to become their own health advocates."

Dr. Ricks-Cord and her husband, Rodney Cord, have three children. Evan is the oldest at nine, Faith is four years old, and baby Garrett is 11 months. The couple has family members in Philadelphia and Indiana.

Appointments can now be scheduled with Dr. Ricks-Cord at Carolinas Womens Center by calling 910-277-3331.
