Scotland Health Care System is pleased to announce Ella "Recci" Rock, RN, FNP, Hospitalist Service Coordinator, has been chosen as one of the 2010 recipients of the Great 100 Award for Nursing Excellence in North Carolina.
The Great 100, Inc. is a grassroots peer organization honoring the nursing profession in North Carolina by recognizing the importance of registered nurses in diverse practice settings. Each year 100 North Carolina registered nurses are selected for positively impacting the image of nursing as a profession and demonstrating excellence in practice and commitment to their profession.
Mrs. Rock felt led to a nursing career at a young age while working at a Cheraw Hospital. "I was hired as a patient transporter for the operating room," she commented. "During downtime, I was allowed to watch surgeries. When I saw these same patients walking the hall a day or two after surgery, I was amazed at how quickly their bodies healed and what medicine had done for them. I knew I wanted to be part of that process. I was fortunate to be in the company of some awesome nurses who saw my interest and took the time to mentor me."
Camille Utter, RN, BSN, OCN, Interim Vice President of Nursing, stated, "Recci was instrumental in the launch of the Hospitalist service at our facility. As a Nurse Practitioner, and the program's coordinator, she admits, discharges and rounds on inpatients in the acute care setting and, in conjunction with the Medical Director, is responsible for developing policies and protocols for the operation of the service. Prior to this service's launch, we had limited involvement of midlevel providers on the inpatient service. She was the "ideal" first hire for this service as she clearly has the credibility and respect needed from the medical, nursing, and other clinical staff in the organization. She also continues her role as a clinical educator for nursing staff and preceptor for other midlevel providers (both physician assistants and nurse practitioners). And, when the opportunity presents itself, she represents the Hospitalist service and our hospital in the community."
Mrs. Rock graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992 and joined Scotland Memorial Hospital in 2001. She initially worked in the ICU, progressed to clinical educator, and then became Director of Staff Development, demonstrating excellence in the role of preceptor, teacher, mentor, and provider.
In May 2007, Rock earned a Master's degree in nursing, completing the requirements to add the credential Family Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Jeff Moore, Hospitalist Medical Director, offers nothing but praise for her work. "Mrs. Rock does an outstanding job as our coordinator and is wonderful with the patients. All of us in the Hospitalist service are very proud of her and believe she is very deserving of this award."
"I couldn't be happier with the success of the Hospitalist service," Rock added. "The community has been very receptive to the program and I am delighted our patients recognize our Hospitalist team thrives on delivering quality health care."
Mrs. Rock says her desire to succeed comes from her patients. "My job satisfaction comes from walking out of a patient's room knowing that I provide quality healthcare, as well as identify with that patient as a human being and not just a diagnosis. Rock concluded, "I believe when you recognize patients and their family members as actual people, you have more respect for the care you provide and a stronger sense of responsibility to provide the best care possible….whatever your level of contribution."
The Great 100 recipients will be recognized at a black tie gala award ceremony, on September 18 in Greensboro.
A Cheraw native, Mrs. Rock is the daughter of Jackie Melton and the late John Laney Melton, Jr. of Cheraw. She and her husband Johnny Rock have a daughter, Ella who is nine, and a son, Jackson who is eleven. She resides in Cheraw with her family.
