Brooke Jenkins of Laurinburg has been named Executive Director of the Scotland Memorial Foundation.
Ms. Jenkins' new role brings her full circle to the health care and marketing arena. "I completed a summer internship in the Marketing Department at Scotland Health Care System following my junior year at UNC Chapel Hill," she commented. "I was a Business major, with a focus on marketing, and thought I would go the marketing route following college, so the internship was a great experience. I was very interested in health care, marketing, and the elderly population. However, at the end of my senior year, after interviewing with several employers, I just didn't find a marketing job that felt right."
Joyce McDow, Chair of the Scotland Memorial Foundation Board of Trustees, says the Foundation board is excited about the addition of Ms. Jenkins to the staff. "Brooke has the advantage of knowing the community as she begins her tenure as the Director of the Foundation. She has a rich and varied background that will lend much support to our endeavors. As a Board, we look forward to sharing Brooke's enthusiasm and strong work ethic as we continue with our strategic plan and capital campaign."
After earning a Bachelor of Science from UNC Chapel Hill, Ms. Jenkins' career took a totally different direction when she was presented with the opportunity to work as a courier for a three-person law firm in Charlotte. "The firm had a program for those who were planning to enter law school. During that one year I had a more rounded and fulfilling experience than many law students receive in their summer internships. So I applied and was accepted to the UNC School of Law."
With her law degree in hand, Jenkins returned to Laurinburg, first working at the firm of Purcell and Griswold, and later changing firms to work with Lisa Blalock. "While I enjoyed working with Bill Purcell and Lisa Blalock and being back in my home community, after several years I realized that I might not be doing what I was called to do. So I decided to seek out a different means of public service and resigned from the law firm. I believe that Scotland Memorial Foundation is a great fit for me. I also feel that my law experience can be useful in my work with the Foundation."
Jenkins brings other service experience to her new role. She recently chaired the Board of the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center of Scotland County. She currently serves as Chair of the Encore! Theatre Board and Secretary for the Laurinburg Junior Service League; and she is an advisor for the high school youth program at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
When asked about her new fundraising role, Jenkins responded, "I find the Foundation is not as much about raising money as it is about marketing the Foundation and increasing the awareness of its role in the community. Yes, we raise money but it's also about building and maintaining relationships with people and businesses in the community. We're here as connectors between Scotland Health Care System and the needs of the community. And if we appropriately communicate the needs of each, then individuals and business will provide the generous support necessary for the Foundation to continue giving back to the community through free health screenings, health awareness programs, scholarships to high school students, facilities and equipment purchases for the health care system, and in many other ways."
Jenkins' first major Foundation event will be November's Putting on the Ritz-A Gala of Giving. "I'm excited about coming on board to help plan this event. We want to make sure the attendees thoroughly enjoy the Ritz, but that they also know its true purpose, which is to raise money to support health programs and services in our community. We have very committed board members and a talented staff, and I'm very excited about working with them. I'm also looking forward to working with the health care system administration."
