April 1st marked Scotland Health Care System's first anniversary of its management agreement with Carolinas HealthCare System of Charlotte.

"Though the first year has been a busy one, it has also been extremely successful," stated James Mason, Scotland Health Care System's Chairman. "The resources Carolinas HealthCare has provided in both staff and systems have been extremely beneficial. We have reaped many valuable returns from our relationship. We have also been able to maintain complete control locally for key strategic and operational decisions."

The biggest tangible gains the hospital system receives from this management relationship include group purchasing power, organized peer management groups, and the comparative data, benchmarks and best practices gathered from the CHS support arm and other CHS-affiliated hospitals. "The exciting nature of our relationship with CHS, however, is its approach to us. CHS advises, consults, and suggests, but does not mandate," said Gregory Wood, Scotland Health Care System CEO.

The hospital has also recently completed an agreement to use a Carolinas subsidiary, Carolinas Physician Network (CPN), to manage Scotland Health Care System's existing physician practices and serve as a primary vehicle for future physician practices. This partnership will be critical to continue to successfully recruit physicians to our community and to integrate medical information systems, a federal requirement and a key to providing higher quality care at a lower cost.

"Our Board's decision to join the Carolinas HealthCare System team has already exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to a long future together as we continue to provide excellent healthcare and service for our community," concluded Mr. Mason.

Scotland Health Care System is a community owned, not-for-profit health care system located in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The 154-bed system is comprised of the 104-bed Scotland Memorial Hospital, The 50-bed Edwin Morgan Center, Scotland Memorial Foundation, and Hospice of Scotland County. The Health Care System also owns and operates four primary care facilities, a general surgery practice and an ob/gyn practice.

With more than 1,000 employees, Scotland Health Care System is Scotland County's largest, non-governmental, private employer. Its medical staff includes 71 physicians representing many medical specialties. Scotland Memorial Hospital is ranked in the top 10 percent in North Carolina for Surgical Care. In 2008, the Health Care System contributed more than $8 million in charity care to the community.
