Susan Phy, an oncology pharmacist at Scotland Memorial Hospital, is now board certified in this specialty. With this certification, Phy becomes one of only 26 board-certified Oncology Pharmacists in North Carolina with this top-level distinction and training.
Phy, who has worked as an oncology pharmacist at Scotland Memorial since 2008, is a 2006 graduate of Campbell University's School of Pharmacy. Since joining Scotland Memorial, she has worked with patients and physicians at Scotland Cancer Treatment Center to recommend, provide and monitor chemotherapy drugs to optimize positive patient outcomes. She also is responsible for verifying chemotherapy orders, ensuring chemotherapy is mixed appropriately, providing drug information to patients and staff, reviewing patient medication lists for drug interactions and maintaining drug inventory. Currently, Phy, and pharmacy technician, Joanna Shoemake, mix between 10 and 20 chemotherapy solutions per day as well as other non-chemotherapy solutions.
In order to earn board-certification, Phy was required to be a working pharmacist for four years with fifty percent of her time spent in oncology pharmacy work. This credential also involved achieving a passing score on the Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Certification Exam.
"This special certification was important for me to achieve because it allows me to offer patients the most advanced level of pharmaceutical care and treatment," says Phy. "It allows me to focus on my area of interest and have the knowledge and skills to provide excellent patient care and to have the best possible impact on patient outcomes. This post-licensing certification is one of the highest an oncology pharmacist can achieve and is important so that the highest standards for specialty-level knowledge and skills are met to enhance patient care."
According to Dr. Kelvin Raybon, medical oncologist, Phy's certification is just another way Scotland Cancer Treatment Center is advancing its care to local and area patients. "Ms. Phy's certification, our outstanding cancer team, and our affiliation with the Duke Cancer Institute, make our Center one of the finest in the state."
